This is Mateo. He has been in my Babystorytime but recently graduated to the Toddler group. He has wonderful parents who will be bringing home a new baby in April.

They came to the library with this book and picture. Pam wanted to make this quilt for the new baby - sex not known. She asked for direction. I told her to get fabrics and I would help her, of course!!!! That's what i do!!!!!

I came home and was possessed!!!!!!!!! I just had to try the technique of sewing the strips together and cutting the triangles and sewing them together. I started with pieces from my scrap bag and a few others easy to get from my closet.
In no time, I had the hexagon and then added the bug fabric at the ends to make a rectangle. This will be for Mateo. They will be moving to Arizona and I had to include some MSU fabric from their time here.

These are the extra pieces - for Mateos' baby doll. I couldn't let them go to waste!!!!!!!!

Pam purchased the fabrics for the baby quilt and due to tight monies, was going to return them. I interviened - "let me buy them from you and I'll make it."
The family stopped in the library Friday afternoon with the bag of fabric.
I washed it, added some yellows, and cut strips...........sewed the strips together..........and these are the 2 pieces that I cut into triangles.

Here is the hexagon. It measures about 54 inches across.

The directions say to cut off 2 edges to make a rectangle..........and a good size for a baby.
I'm not sure what to do - cut off the sides or leave this as a hexagon quilt for the baby........
Pam..........what do you want?????

Whatever I do, I will have lots of pieces left over - maybe a quilt for the mom????? It will be
very scrappy looking...........
When I tackle a project like this...............I get possessed!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I think it's always hard to cut it, I do like the rectangle-ness (I'm sure that's a word) of the quilt. You're so nice to make this for them, Linda.
When you say you are "possessed", I guess you are right on the money. You got this together in nothing flat --- and it is going to bring so much joy to Mateo. While I know the temptation to make a rectangle, I think it really looks neat as a hexagon. By the way, the flowers on your jade plant are so delicate --- I've never seen them before.
You are so special!!! I like the rectanglish one best. It will be easier to use and put in a crib etc.
I vote hexagon. When you trim to a square, the trimmings just make another UFO to deal with.
I can only say ditto to Carol's comments! You do get possessed. I do, also, (proably a middle name for quilters??) but am far from being as productive! Loved the quilt -- and hexagon shape. Daisy
linda, you are so incredible!!! and so quick!?! i can't believe you are this far already - on mateo's, the doll quilt (!), and the new baby's! we are so so blessed to have you in our lives! i wish i had a talent i could use for you.
as for the shape... i can't decide! hexagon would be bigger for the baby to grow into right? but rectangle would look perfect in the crib. so i say you decide, and surprise us. :)
we are thankful/grateful/shocked/loved/blessed either way. :)
Linda, this is just the sweetest thing. I am inspired by you to do something like this for someone else I know.
omg! you are awesome and amazing!!!
Hey Linda!
I vote for the hexagon - you can always tuck in the sides for a crib, and it gives a lot more room for the baby to be on the quilt and not on the floor. ANYbody can have a rectangular quilt!
