The top one shows off the wedges more, but it's DEAD!!!
But the bottom one POPS them!!!
Of course, that's just my opinion!!!

The hard part will be making a template - and keeping the wedges flat.............the pattern said to applique them on a square , then trim. I really think I'd like to piece the center.......
I have my work cut out for me. I don't know how many of these I will do - have almost 4 completed - and they are 24 inches across - so it would make a wall hanging at this point.
Time will tell..........and maybe I'm getting tired of these and want to move on to another hand piecing project.............

I definitely agree that the first choice is better. Have you tried a dark fabric? --- it would probably pop the lighter and brighter. That will be an interesting process to piece in the center --- good luck!
Yikes! All of those wedges!!! And then such a strange shape to fit into the center - what fun for a self-challenging quilter - that would be YOU! Good Luck! Have fun! Four may be p-l-e-n-t-y!
